Jump on the bus for less this Car Free Day

Jump on the bus for less this Car Free Day

"Car Free Day is the perfect opportunity to think about how you get from A to B and do something good for the environment."
Lisa Pearson

Better By Bus is supporting Car Free Day on Sunday 22nd September by offering passengers an exclusive bus ticket offer.

Throughout the day, those wanting to swap the car for the bus can purchase a half-price ticket on Arriva and Stagecoach’s mobile apps, so they can join in on a city region-wide scheme to reduce air pollution.

Car Free Day is an international event that happens every year on 22nd September. The purpose of the day is to highlight the impact that air pollution and congestion has on the quality of the air, particularly in urban areas.

With 70% of buses in Liverpool City Region powered by electric, hybrid or low emission engines, as well as the average age of buses being under seven years, swapping the car for the bus is one of the easiest ways for people to reduce their carbon footprint.

In recognition of the pressing threat of climate change and the urgent need to take action, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority declared a climate emergency at its Annual Meeting in May.

Local community groups in Liverpool are also celebrating Car Free Day with their own activities, including Love Wavertree, who have worked with Liverpool City Council to turn Wavertree High Street into a car-free street for the day.

Lisa Pearson, campaign conductor at Better By Bus, said:

“Car Free Day is the perfect opportunity to think about how you get from A to B and do something good for the environment.

“We’re extremely proud of our current fleet of low emissions buses, and we are looking forward to adding 25 hydrogen-powered buses to the fleet next year, which will emit zero emissions.

“Of course, we already know that getting on the bus has a number of benefits, including contactless payment, free wi-fi and USB chargers, but we also think that recent news coverage around extinction rebellion protests and climate emergencies has helped people realise that something must change soon.

“We would encourage anyone who is interested in reducing their carbon footprint to use our Car Free Day bus ticket on Sunday and see for themselves how easy it is to help protect the planet.”

Better By Bus is led by Liverpool City Region’s Bus Alliance, which is made up of Merseytravel, Stagecoach and Arriva. The alliance formed in 2016 and aims to get more people on board by promoting the numerous benefits of catching the bus.
