The founders of Manchester-based Marq Millions, a financial services provider, have sponsored a team of ambitious Stretford Grammar School students with their sights set on winning a once in a lifetime competition prize.

The team of six pupils, known as SG-Force, are now one step closer to a place at this year’s F1 in Schools World Finals in Singapore after winning the Development Class at the North West F1 in Schools STEM Challenge Regional Final in January.

This success has secured them a place at the UK National Finals to be held on 19th and 20th March at the famous Silverstone race circuit in Northamptonshire. Winning at National level will bring SG-Force the opportunity to represent their country at the World Finals. In addition, the F1 in Schools UK Champions and runners up will receive tickets to the 2018 FORMULA 1 BRITISH GRAND PRIX at Silverstone.

The F1 in Schools STEM Challenge runs in 45 countries. The competition, which has three classes; entry, development and professional, challenges students to design, develop, manufacture and race a scale model Formula 1 race car.

For the last six months, the Year 10 design and technology students, age 14 and 15, have been working on the project. The car, which has been created using 3D modelling software and built with high-density foam, is being sponsored by Marq Millions and will carry the company’s logo, alongside multinational consumer and commercial electronics manufacturing company, Casio.

The entrepreneurial school pupils were also responsible for preparing a business and budget plan and raising sufficient funds through marketing and sponsorship activities to be able to take part in the competition.

Speaking about the sponsorship, Mahmood Ali Kamran, Director of Operations at Marq Millions, said: “It’s a privilege to be involved with such a gifted and inspiring team of young engineers and designers. The SG Force team has shown real determination throughout this competition - their professionalism and maturity is exemplary.

“The F1 in Schools Challenge supports the development and application of a broad range of skills needed in the future, whatever pupils choose to do after completing school.

“We are fully behind SG Force’s quest to become F1 in Schools Champions and wish them the best of luck at the UK finals.”

Team Leader Joel Renjith adds: “We’re so happy about how far we’ve come in this competition and could not have done it without support from our kind sponsors, families and friends.

“We’re really excited about reaching the finals at Silverstone and meeting other winning school teams from across the UK.”
