Major £1m investment in vehicle fleet by CSG Middlesbrough

"Productivity is up 50 per cent and with a more efficient business, we can increase sales with trucks carrying out more work each day"
CSG Regional Business Manager Craig Dufferwiel

National waste management specialist CSG is undergoing a major investment of nearly £1million in its vehicle fleet in Teesside which has had a positive effect on productivity and efficiency.

Seven years ago, the Middlesbrough depot had one vehicle and one driver, now it has 10 drivers and 12 vehicles.

CSG specialises in creating innovative solution to domestic and industrial waste management challenges, developing its own technologies to process waste such as sewage, vessel bilge water and engine sludge, industrial effluent, landfill leachate, forecourt service waste, emulsions and engineering waste.

The depot, in Holden Close, grew steadily using older vehicles sourced from other CSG depots nationwide. However, the older vehicles had begun to impact on service and reliability.

Regional Business Manager Craig Dufferwiel said:As the vehicles became older, they always seemed to be in the garage with increasing downtime, which is why we decided to invest in new vehicles. We were keen to advance and grow the business, but you can only go so far when the trucks are in the garage every few weeks.”

Recent acquisitions include three Scania R450 units, Whale Tankers, including barrel refurbishment, and a 4,000 gallon ADR with a jetting unit for cleaning out drainage and gullies. Two more ADRs with jetting units are scheduled for delivery in December 2019 and January 2020.

A 7.5 tonne van used to collect asbestos and lab smalls has also been replaced by a DAF 18 tonne vehicle which is more efficient as it can visit more customers in one trip.

Craig added: “The new vehicles are much more reliable, and come with maintenance packages, so they are having a very positive impact. Productivity is up 50 per cent and with a more efficient business, we can increase sales with trucks carrying out more work each day.

“The future is looking very good. We still have some of our ‘classics’ as we call them, but the new vehicles mean there is less downtime and we do not have drivers waiting for their vehicles to be repaired. It is much more efficient.”

CSG, which operates from 27 sites across the UK, is one of the largest privately-owned industrial and domestic environmental waste management groups in Britain.

CSG employs more than 500 people nationally, supporting a national network of waste treatment and recycling service centres. For more information, visit: www.csg.co.uk
