Derricks Rocking Mural is a Top 50 Hit

Derricks Rocking Mural is a Top 50 Hit

"The Derricks mural is already creating a stir among visitors to Lower Oxford Street and it gives the area extra vibrancy, so we are pleased to have part-funded the initiative."
Russell Greenslade, Swansea BID Chief Executive

One of Swansea City Centre’s most iconic stores has unveiled a dazzling new look to help mark Swansea’s 50th year of city status.

Derricks Music, which has been keeping music fans supplied with fresh sounds, gig tickets and music merchandise for more than 50 years, now sports a vibrant mural, featuring landmark band art from the past half a century – from The Rolling Stones to Man, Bowie, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Eagles, Iron Maiden and Kate Bush.

Derricks owner Christos Stylianou said: “I wanted to do something special to mark my own 50th birthday, as well as more than 50 years of Derricks, and the 50th year of city status for Swansea. So I approached Swansea BID about the idea of putting a lively mural on the building, as a photographable attraction for visitors, and to help give Oxford Street a boost. I wanted to make sure there were a few Swansea references and Welsh references in there, so the mural features the Man Band, as well as War of the Worlds – which famously featured Richard Burton’s voice. The artwork is also a thank-you to our customers, who have supported Derricks over the years and have helped us become part of the fabric of the community here.”

Russell Greenslade, Chief Executive of Swansea BID (Business Improvement District) said: “The Derricks mural is already creating a stir among visitors to Lower Oxford Street and it gives the area extra vibrancy, so we are pleased to have part-funded the initiative. We are open to supporting other public artworks like this one in the future, where building owners give their consent. Ensuring Swansea City Centre looks attractive is a key aspect of our operations at Swansea BID, which is why we are happy to find or part fund creative initiatives like this one, and why we fund hanging basket schemes for BID businesses, and planting schemes throughout the BID area.”

The Derricks mural was created by Fresh Murals, which has also been behind a number of other eye-catching public artworks throughout Swansea, including the images of cricket icons which grace Mumbles Road.
