"I have always been a big daydreamer, working out ways to do things better, or coming up with new ideas. "
From a light-bulb moment that was conceived after its founder became a mother, Liverpool based subscription box business Dearbump is born.
Dearbump based in Childwall, is the brain-child of Mpower finalist Emma Jarvis, 28, who is now seeing her clever idea become a thriving reality. From feeling disappointed with the lack of products and information available throughout her own pregnancy Emma suddenly had a brainwave to create a monthly box similar to Birchbox but dedicated to mums-to-be.
After joining forces with fellow mum, Hannah Reeson, 26, from Speke, the business was born.
“I have always been a big daydreamer, working out ways to do things better, or coming up with new ideas. As soon as women find out they’re pregnant the entire focus is on the baby, I thought surely women everywhere that are pregnant would be grateful of a gift in the post each month, especially one dedicated to their exact stage in pregnancy.
“My mind suddenly went into overdrive, I think I could have filled a hundred boxes there and then with items I would like to receive. I began to put pen to paper and map out how I was going to make this a reality.”
Emma, a chemistry graduate with an MBA from Liverpool University, left her role at Unilever to join forces with Hannah in November 2017 and officially launched Dearbump in April 2018.
Emma continued: “After mulling over my idea, I knew my friend Hannah would be the ideal addition to the business, a fellow mum and someone with great entrepreneurial spirit. Once Hannah was on board, we took our time to grow Dearbump, taking baby steps in way of research, branding, website building and designing all of the packaging.
“We conducted extensive research to find and filter through the market to find the best products for pregnant women and ones that were safe and right for each month that passed. We really wanted the arrival of the box to be a special moment for our pregnant customers, so we’ve been pretty picky!”
Dearbump, is a monthly bundle for mums-to-be based in the UK. It’s designed to help pregnant women take a little time out each month to make memories of their pregnancy and spend quality time bonding with their bumps. The monthly subscription, which costs £34, provides women with a box full of products right up until their due date, which have been chosen specifically for their gestation with advice and information and links to resources which some women might not otherwise have access to.
Emma said: “Our boxes contain healthy snacks, pregnancy tea, beauty and personal care products, gifts and treats to pamper mums-to-be, as well as a host of information and advice. It’s nice to have something just for the mum too, we’ve already had some wonderful feedback on our boxes making the perfect baby shower gift.
“I can remember being pregnant and feeling like the only woman in the world to feel this way, our boxes remind our subscribers that they are not alone and there is a world full of advice, help and safe products out there.”
Dearbump currently works with over 20 British brands including Liverpool-based Cocobaroque and Freya Luna.
“In our early conversations, Hannah and I were both committed to working with other Liverpool-based businesses. There is such creativity in our city and we wanted to ensure that Dearbump gave very deserving and ethical brands further limelight.” Said Emma.
“We are so excited to be officially launched now and sharing our ever-blooming business with women across the UK. As well as our subscriptions, we’ve taken time to create other boxes which are perfect gifts and a vegan specific range.”
Since officially launching, the business is self-funded but is now looking for investors. All information and contact details can be found at https://www.dearbump.com/
