Industry initiative to help with Bread and Butter issues launches

"Its a collective for the experience industries of hospitality, retail, leisure and tourism."
Liam Jones

The newly formed Liverpool-based Bread and Butter Co launched their initiative for the hospitality and ‘experience’ sectors at The Bridewell last week.

The brainchild of Liam Jones, founder of www.foursquaregroupltd.com the Bread and Butter Co.’s sole objective is to provide the tools necessary for independent business to compete with industry big-hitters and play an even bigger part in Liverpool’s journey.

Based on the information collected at the launch event, the initiative will deliver a programme of business support which will range from networking to subsidised products and training.

Liam explained: “Foursquare Group is collaborating with www.ubiquitypr.co.uk www.moosedigitalmedia.com and www.spaghettigroup.com to create the ‘Bread and Butter Co’.

"It’s a collective for the ‘experience industries’ of hospitality, retail, leisure and tourism. We’ll be focussing our efforts on supporting independent hotels, restaurants, pubs, bars, artisan food and drink and boutique and speciality shopping.

"Independent business is crucial to our local economy, not only providing a large contribution financially but also playing a huge part in how we and others see the city region. These experience industries create our identity and the experience the city offers to its residents, visitors and outside investors”.

The night consisted of firstly, Bread and Butter Co individually sharing their opinion on how the same challenges in independent businesses reoccur and the additional support required, hence the idea for the collaboration.

Guest speakers included Dalip Matta from Matta’s who spoke of how the business has become more niche to adapt to changes in how people shop as well as taste changes through different and emerging generations of customers.

Antony Strove from Little World opened up about the fact that one of his hardest obstacles was the actual concept of his business…a zero-waste store also encompassing a hospitality and dining experience through its vegetarian and vegan café.

Peter and Elaine Kinsella who operate Lunya and Lunyalita impressed on the audience how important cash flow is to a hospitality business regardless of turnover.

Peter also made mention of the “massive challenge of finding the right people in the industry at every level.”

Hosts for the evening, Fiona, Dom and Ian from The Bridewell explained how their biggest challenge when first setting up the pub was finding the right site and the funding for the development of the business.

The final speaker Simon Thompson from bar brand Present Company at Albert Dock admitted he was in the middle of a marketing dilemma and wished he’d invested in more marketing. “I am currently figuring out, whether to get an external marketing team to help us out or do I bring someone in internally?”
