A new site manager has been appointed to take charge at the Essity Manchester Mill on Trafford Park Road in Manchester.

George Placogiannakis is taking the helm at Trafford Park after leading operations at the Swedish tissue giant’s paper mill in the North East of England.

George will replace local man Jim Lang, who has been appointed to support Essity’s manufacturing operations in North America as manufacturing excellence director for professional hygiene products.

Jim started his papermaking career as an apprentice at the Trafford Park mill in 1990.

As the new site manager for Essity in Manchester, George brings more than 27 years of multi-national manufacturing experience to the role.

A qualified chemical engineer, he started his career with the company as a process engineer in Greece, covering different roles in converting, papermaking and continuous improvement, before moving to lead Essity manufacturing sites in the UK, including Oakenholt and Chesterfield.

On his move to Manchester, George said: “I’d like to congratulate Jim on his new role; it’s a fantastic opportunity which also demonstrates the commitment Essity makes in developing talent within the business.

“We currently have two apprentice opportunities at Trafford Mill for two bright Mancunians and Jim is living proof that talented people have the opportunity to shine in this business. There’s great career progression and the potential to work elsewhere in the world.

“On a personal level, I’m delighted to join the team at Trafford Park. It is one of a number of key assets for Essity’s UK manufacturing operations; the site has a long and proud history of manufacturing in this area, with a highly skilled workforce and a strong reputation for delivering results.

“Going forward, the focus is to continue driving excellence in our UK manufacturing capabilities through new technologies, skills development and digitalisation tools to advance site performance.”

Essity’s Trafford Park Mill has 180 employees and makes popular household brands Cushelle toilet tissue and Plenty household towel, as well as producing own label products for major UK customers including Asda. The mill produces more than 700,000 rolls a day and also incorporates a nearby International Distribution Centre (IDC).

The company is seeking to recruit two new apprentices to train as a manufacturing process operator and an electrical engineering apprentice. The Essity apprenticeship programme is aligned to the Advanced Modern Apprenticeship framework and designed to develop individuals to take on a full-time position within the business.

Essity is a world leader in the production of personal care products, including incontinence products, baby care, feminine care and medical solutions. Essity is also the world’s second largest supplier of consumer tissue, producing toilet paper, household towels, handkerchiefs, facial tissues, wet wipes and napkins. The business currently employs 1,100 staff across six manufacturing sites in the UK.
