Lytham business is named one of UKs top employers

"We are extremely proud to be on the list of the Best 100 Small Companies To Work For in 2020."
Michael Abbott, CEO of BiU

A business from Lytham St Annes has been named one of the Best 100 Small Companies To Work For of 2020. Energy and utility management firm BiU made it on to the prestigious list, compiled by the Sunday Times, for being one of the best employers in the UK.

BiU currently employs over 110 people on the Fylde coast in Lancashire, making a point of hiring and nurturing local talent. Michael Abbott, CEO of BiU, believes that the company’s deep roots in the local community are what makes it such a good employer. “As a teenager I used to work as a car-park attendant on St Anne’s pier, and now we’re in a building overlooking that very pier! I’m proud that the business has its roots on the Fylde and I’m proud that of the last six positions we filled, five were filled by people who already live here in Lancashire.”

The business has seen impressive growth since it was founded in 1997 with just two partners, but reaching the 100-employee mark has been all about growing organically, rather than getting involved in takeovers. It’s a more sustainable type of growth that allows BiU to choose and nurture each individual hire. This makes for a connected, supportive working environment. The company’s #OneBiU programme allows colleagues to reward each other with merits, thank-yous and gifts for good work.

BiU has a strong focus on skills, and the company’s employees find there are plenty of opportunities for training. They are also given the chance to learn in a less formal setting through regular “Lunch and Learn” sessions, where people share their specialist knowledge with colleagues.

Although many of BiU’s utility and energy management clients are huge national and international businesses, there is a strong sense of being part of the local community and wanting to give something back. Every member of staff gets an extra day of paid leave each year to spend doing charitable work locally and the company has raised thousands over the years for charities. For Christmas 2019, BiU’s Trolley Dash activity raised enough for Fylde Food Bank to provide over 475 meals for people in need.

Michael Abbott, CEO of BiU, said: “We are extremely proud to be on the list of the Best 100 Small Companies To Work For in 2020. It’s an achievement only made possible by the 112 bold, responsible, imaginative and together team members who power BiU.”

Jonathan Austin, CEO of Best Companies, said: “I would like to congratulate BiU on its achievement. They have continued to focus on their employees and been rewarded with an engaged workforce who tell us that this is one of the best companies to work for.” The Best Companies accreditation was set up in 2006 to acknowledge workplace excellence.
