MANAGEMENT changes at Redrow Homes (Yorkshire) reflect the company’s strong commitment to developing talent and promoting from within.
John Handley has been promoted to managing director after seven years as commercial director.
Existing commercial manager Bill Parker will now head up the commercial team, while senior quantity surveyor Stuart Hill becomes chief QS. And, in the technical team, senior designer Christopher Peatfield has been promoted to design manager.
Taking charge of the Wakefield-based operation, which has circa 12 housing outlets in North, West and East Yorkshire, John said: “Redrow has an excellent reputation for home-growing and developing talent. I’ve been working towards this role over the last three to four years and have undertaken specific leadership training within the business designed to accelerate and facilitate the transition.
“It’s very satisfying to see the roles of other team members evolving too.”
John, who lives in York and is married with a four-year-old son, joined Redrow 20 years ago as an assistant quantity surveyor. He had a BSC (Hons) degree in quantity surveying from Leeds Metropolitan University and had previously worked for a local construction company and then Barratt Homes.
“Joining Redrow really gave me a chance to turn my job into a career. They’ve provided the support, training and experience needed to guide me to my current role,” he said.
“As managing director I’ll now be looking for us to buy more land for future development, to ensure the division remains productive and profitable and, above all, to empower the team and make sure we’re all working together to provide quality new homes and sustainable communities.”
Redrow’s Yorkshire operation currently has clusters of developments around Leeds, Wakefield, Huddersfield and Harrogate, and is gearing up to launch 56 new homes in Swanland, near Hull. It is already redeveloping the old Bishopgarth police training centre in Wakefield and is developing circa 20 acres of land at Thorpe Park Leeds with up to 300 new homes.
The division is responsible for circa 450 of Redrow’s annual legal completions and directly employs around 150 people, while providing work for hundreds more sub-contractors and those employed in the supply chain.
Bill Parker first joined Redrow in 1998 as a graduate trainee and stayed for 10 years. After a short spell away from the business he returned in 2010 as a quantity surveyor, rising to become commercial manager in July 2018. He now heads up the quantity surveying and buying team in Wakefield.
Stuart Hill has been with Redrow for six-and-a-half years, originally as a graduate trainee after graduating from Sheffield Hallam University with a BSC (Hons) in quantity surveying. He’s progressed steadily through the QS ranks to his new position of chief quantity surveyor.
New design manager Christopher Peatfield came to Redrow just under four years ago as a senior designer after studying architecture and working for David Wilson Homes.
Redrow’s Group HR director Karen Jones said: “All of these promotions are symbolic of our approach. Redrow continues to lead and inspire the next generation of homebuilders through its apprenticeships, graduate training programmes and other initiatives.
“Nationally, over 15% of our workforce are on a structured training programme and John is among the 50% of directors who come from internal promotions.
“We hold the Quality Mark from the British Institute of Learning and Development for the standard of training delivered, having been the first and only housebuilder to achieve it; and we have more than 20 employees enrolled on Redrow’s own three-year housebuilding degree course, run in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University and Coleg Cambria.”
