"It is a tremendous development, transforming an iconic local landmark that had stood empty for some time into a vibrant and important facility for the community."
TRP Consulting director Geoff Wilks
The UK’s first care village to feature a heritage gallery, created by a team including leading structural engineering specialist TRP Consulting, is winning national and local recognition.
Belong Newcastle-under-Lyme opened its doors in April 2018, providing 24-hour nursing and dementia care facilities for 72 residents in six households and 28 apartments for independent living, along with a range of community facilities.
It boasts an extensive village centre, including bistro, exercise studio and therapy room and also a unique Heritage Gallery, housed in a historic Grade II listed building. The once derelict property was transformed thanks to a £1.8m Heritage Lottery Fund grant.
The overall project has received The Care Home Design of the Year award at the Leaders in Care Awards 2019, which recognises developments which raise the bar in the sector.
And it has followed that notable national success with two wins at the Newcastle-under-Lyme Civic Awards – in the commercial new buildings and conversion and refurbishment categories.
Belong has been praised for the work saving and re-inventing the striking listed building at risk on the development site, which is now making a major positive contribution to Newcastle-under-Lyme’s townscape.
The Belong Heritage Gallery received more than 4,000 visitors in its first year of opening and won the RICS Award for Community Benefit.
TRP’s expert team worked to help integrate the iconic 17th century building sympathetically within the village.
The gallery is incorporated within the village centre and aims to link the past and present through shared memories, experiences and reminiscence.
It forms the base for Belong’s Experience Days service, specialist day care for older people, and aims to become a dementia centre of excellence.
TRP Consulting, which is headquartered in Manchester, specialises in providing civil, structural and environmental engineering consultancy services. Its highly experienced structural engineers have a strong track record of delivery on large complex building works.
The Newcastle-upon-Lyme project is one of a series of care village developments that TRP’s team has been involved in for the not-for-profit organisation which is based in Nantwich, Cheshire.
TRP Consulting director Geoff Wilks said: “We have a long and successful relationship with Belong, working on state-of-the-art care facilities and accommodation in communities across the UK.
“We’re delighted that the Newcastle-under-Lyme project is rightfully receiving accolades both nationally and locally.
“It is a tremendous development, transforming an iconic local landmark that had stood empty for some time into a vibrant and important facility for the community and allowing people to engage positively with the area’s heritage.
“There is great synergy between the impressive historic building and the new element of the development, the modern, cutting-edge care village.”
He added: “The care and health sector is a strong growth area for us.
We’ve seen a steady increase in work over the past few years as the need for high quality care services and accommodation for older people continues to rise.”
