New year, new home for thriving architects' practice

A growth in business has prompted the move for Shropshire firm Base Architecture & Design

New year, new home for thriving architects' practice

"Over the past 16 years, we have been lucky enough to enjoy organic and sustainable growth as our reputation for delivering design excellence has spread"

A firm of Shropshire architects has underpinned its long-term strategy for growth with a move to accommodate its burgeoning team. Base Architecture & Design will relocate to larger premises in Castle Street, Shrewsbury, from its current home at the Nexus building in Roushill later this year.

The Grade II listed premises are being refurbished to cater for its expanding workforce - new appointments in 2019 took the total Base team to 18.

The past 12 months has seen a series of milestone achievements for the firm, which works on residential and commercial schemes across the UK.

In February, it secured the first approval from Telford & Wrekin Council under its HO10 planning policy that allows new homes to be built in rural areas if they deliver ‘exceptional and innovative’ design.

Three months later, Base won planning permission to convert The Stew in Frankwell, Shrewsbury, into a mixed-use development including a spa, coffee shop and residential apartments, signalling the end of a long running planning battle for its client. It also added a new studio in Conwy, North Wales, to its offices in Shrewsbury and Chester.

Founder and Director Carl Huntley said the move followed another year of unprecedented growth.

“Over the past 16 years, we have been lucky enough to enjoy organic and sustainable growth as our reputation for delivering design excellence has spread,” he said. “With the addition of our Cheshire and North Wales offices, we have been able to expand our network of private and commercial clients, whilst staying true to our commitment to give a high level of customer service.

“This move signals our belief in Shrewsbury as a place to do business and will play a part in the regeneration of this key gateway into the town centre. We could have moved into an out of town business park but we believe in being in the heart of the community where we work.

“Our new office will continue to bring our clients into the town centre and, we hope, inspire other professional businesses to continue to work from and invest in the town centre.”

Base has a reputation for delivering high-end designs for large-scale residential projects. Its portfolio also includes Grand Design style Paragraph 79 new builds, extensions, renovations and refurbishments.

In the commercial field it works in a range of sectors including retail, manufacturing and education, leisure, medical and healthcare. The Base team includes experienced education architects, technical advisors, a town planner, a chartered landscape architect and RIBA-registered client design advisor, making it ideally placed to develop master plans for large scale residential and commercial schemes.
