A Derby charity working with local businesses across the region to make a Dementia friendly community has been handed £1,000 donation from a local housebuilder.

Oakwood Dementia Friendly Community scooped the funding from Persimmon Homes North Midlands.

The donation comes courtesy of the housebuilder’s monthly Community Champions scheme, which gives away up to £2,000 every month to support local worthy causes.

The group’s aim, by engaging local businesses, groups, and residents, is to raise awareness of the challenges faced by those living with Dementia. The donation will be used to enhance the group’s service and provide provisions of activities via home visits, as well as hiring a local community centre to facilitate smaller group gatherings.

Elizabeth Wood, chairperson for the group, said: “We’re delighted to be the latest recipient of Persimmon’s Community Champion funding.

“We currently have 20 businesses on board and have established a thriving Forget Me Not Dementia café for those affected and carers. This provides a huge support mechanism for people to integrate into the community and gain peer support.

“Our café has been unable to operate due to Covid-19 restrictions, however we have been making doorstep visits and deliver regular home care packages and activity packs. This funding will help us back on our feet as a charity when we can welcome our members once again to our café and groups.”

Nadine O’Dowd, sales director at Persimmon Homes North Midlands, said: “We are committed to supporting people and groups in the communities in which we are operating – that’s what our Community Champions scheme is all about.

“We currently have a development in Fleckney and know how important this group is to the local community and we wanted to help out in any way we could.”
