Lexonik, a Middlesbrough-based, award-winning company that specialises in instructing teachers and tutors how to deliver literacy training, is exporting one of its successful UK packages to the UAE by bringing Emirati mothers back to the classroom to support children with their reading.
The parents from GEMS Wellington International School (WIS) will deliver the Lexonik Leap programme to students aged four to 11 on a voluntary basis, to help them learn to read and write in English.
Lexonik Leap was developed in Tees Valley and is designed to support students who speak English as a second language to develop basic English literacy skills.
The training was delivered by Lexonik’s founder and director Katy Parkinson, who has overseen the delivery of the Leap course to more than 200 professional and voluntary tutors. Training at WIS started last term and 12 mothers successfully completed the course this week.
Katy said: “Although we’re a Middlesbrough-based company, this project proves that, when you have the right product, the world’s your oyster. We’re proud to be flying the flag for Teesside in the UAE.
She continued: “I think it’s fantastic that the mothers from WIS school have taken the initiative to get trained up to tutor the Lexonik Leap programme to their children. It can be daunting for children to learn English as a second language and having the support of a parent in the classroom can give a well-needed boost of confidence.”
