A Burton business has been recognised by one of hit TV show Dragon’s Den’s leading stars as part of an award to support Britain’s best small businesses.

Former journalist Cheryl Morris, who owns Creative Word PR, based in the town, was selected for a prestigious Small Business Sunday award as part of the scheme run by successful British businessman Theo Paphitis who is well known for his role on BBC 2 show Dragon’s Den.

The award, run through Twitter and known as #SBS, singles out small businesses who show passion and determination in their industry. They were created by Theo as a way of supporting small businesses and include ongoing support and networking opportunities to help independent businesses flourish. Only 1% of entries are chosen making the award a highly sort after accolade for any small business.

Cheryl, who is a PR specialist helping SMEs and micro businesses to tell their story through words on their website, newsletters, in case studies or the media, was invited to the #SBS award event at the ICC in Birmingham to meet the leading entrepreneur who owns High Street retailer Rymans.

She said: “Meeting Theo was such an inspiring and memorable moment for me as a business owner. Starting my business five years ago I just had a passion to help other small and micro businesses to shout about their successes and tell their story.

“To now be standing on a stage next to a multi-millionaire businessman who chose to believe in me and my business is really something.”

The #SBS event is designed to help entrepreneurs to gain the support they need to grow their business and features first hand guidance from leading business people including specialists from Google on how to maximise your business’ digital presence, free legal advice and even a chance to catch up with fellow Dragon’s Den star and crafting entrepreneur Sara Davies.

The award comes just months after Cheryl was selected by leading business woman Jacqueline Gold CBE, chief executive of Gold International Group, for a Women in Business Award.

Talking at the time about why she chose Burton based Creative Word PR from the multitude of nominees, Jacqueline Gold CBE said: “Creative Word PR expertly works with a range of businesses to help get their news noticed by the right audience. Cheryl’s journalistic experience makes her perfectly placed to help companies share their business stories and raise their profile.

I wish her every success in the future.”

Cheryl trained as a journalist at the Burton Mail completing a Diploma in Journalism before going on to write for BBC online and work in a unitary authority press office.

She started Creative Word PR in 2015 to help support businesses in shouting about their successes. Clients have received coverage in everything from local to regional, trade and even national press including Marie Claire, Yahoo Style, Metro, The Sun, Families online, Woman magazine and BBC online.

Working on a freelance basis the support is tailored around individual needs to make sure that companies only pay for what they need. This makes quality website copy, engaging case studies and national media coverage accessible to all.
