Expert Tips For Winter Lighting In Your Home

"'You could also bring the smells of winter to your home by pulling together raw ingredients - such as oranges, cloves, cinnamon, star anise - and simmering on the hob'"
Time and Tide

While we have enjoyed a scorcher of a summer, it’s time to embrace those cosy winter nights. Of course, with the arrival of the new season comes new trends to creating a welcoming and warm haven. Creating that cosy paradise, most definitely, starts with interior lighting. As such, Time & Tide - luxury interior retailers, based in Scotland - are sharing their tips for reflecting those winter nights with lighting tips and tricks.

Certainly, don’t underestimate the power of lighting. Above all, remember this statement. The right lighting is crucial for your home, turning it from a house to somewhere you can relax and unwind. The style of lighting varies but, if you get it correct, can alter the mood and even increase the perceived size of the room. Of course, lighting is also practical and can even provide that much-needed boost for those who don’t enjoy the nights getting darker. Here are our greatest tips. Don’t stick to one form of lighting. In some cases, just one form of lighting can have the opposite desired effect, making the room appear cold, bland and stark. We suggest mixing and matching various types of lighting - pairing floor and table lamps with candlelight and even a roaring fire. Doing so will enhance texture, warmth and creativity - adding layers to an otherwise neutral backdrop. Make a statement with your lighting and you can create your very own winter paradise.

Is there anything more nurturing and satisfying than curling up in front of your favourite film and basking in a golden glow. We can answer that; there isn’t. Gold is one of the most popular trends for winter and can, ultimately, be achieved relatively easily. Reflect the crisp fallen leaves and the golden sun with geometric lights, textured lanterns and even bold, gold chandeliers. We touched on textured lighting above, but textures are pivotal to creating a cosy home. Textured lighting suits both modern and vintage interiors, and adds a welcoming ambience to your home. You can also create textures with other accessories, such as layering warming throws and cushions, placing various prints on your wall and more.

We would be remiss to not include candlelight in a list of winter trends. Candles remain the most intimate lighting methods (there’s a reason they sell out on Valentine’s Day), and you should covet the light when it gets colder. However, they are at their most effective when combined with other candles of various shapes, styles and sizes. Again, don’t just to stick to ‘one size fits all’, but go bold. Create depth and high impact with large, small scented - you name it. Speaking of scented, you could also bring the smells of winter to your home by pulling together raw ingredients - such as oranges, cloves, cinnamon, star anise - and simmering on the hob. You’ll never want to leave your home.
