A meerkat with a broken tail and a lame horse take starring roles in TV vet Julian Norton’s latest book, On Call With The Yorkshire Vet.

Based on his popular weekly newspaper column, Boroughbridge-based Norton is appearing on the first day of the Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival, taking place in the town’s Crown Hotel from Thursday, October 17 to Sunday, October 20.

Other TV favourites taking to the Raworths stage include BBC Breakfast presenter, Louise Minchin, Waking The Dead actor, Trevor Eve, and fellow Yorkshireman and Countryfile presenter, John Craven.

Now in its ninth year, the four-day event - once again delivered by Harrogate International Festivals - has developed a reputation for being one of the country’s premier literature festivals.

On Call with a Yorkshire Vet, Norton’s fifth book, is the follow up to The Diary of a Yorkshire Vet, and features more tales from his work with a variety of animals -pets and livestock.

Before moving to Boroughbridge, Norton was based at Thirsk’s Skeldale Veterinary Centre, the legendary practice where James Herriot creator, Alf White, worked for more than 30 years.

Born in Castleford and educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield, Norton became a household name in 2015 co-staring in the Channel 5 series, The Yorkshire Vet, which regularly pulled in audiences of more than two million.

Harrogate International Festivals Literature Manager Helen Donkin said: “Julian Norton’s heart-warming and candid books offer a fascinating insight into his eventful life as a rural vet. We are very much looking forward to his appearance and hearing more of his animal anecdotes.”
