Bury boxer Scott Quigg is preparing to defend his WBA World Super Bantamweight title at the Manchester Phones 4U Arena on 13th September and Ric Moylan from Lifestyle Fitness Personal Training (LSFPT) has been instrumental in preparing him for this fight.
Ric is Scott’s strength and conditioning coach, which means he advises and guides him on the correct diet, the optimum amount of sleep, rest and recovery, and carries out regular tests on his bloods, heart and overall health and fitness levels. Ric is Director of Education at LSFPT, a rapidly expanding team of personal trainers, exercise coaches and specialists working across the UK.
Ric has been part of Scott’s training team for over five years. In that time he has completely changed Scott’s diet and introduced a scientific methodology to his training regime.
Scott says: “Ric is a key member of my training team and he works closely with my boxing trainer, Joe Gallagher, to plan in my dietary requirements to complement my training schedule. He has devised a personal diet plan for me and the regular blood and heart tests make sure my fitness levels and weight are constantly monitored to ensure I am at my optimum weight for fights. His training has greatly enhanced my performance and improved my overall conditioning and strength as a fighter.
“My aim is to be the best and to do that, I need to have the best trainers supporting and advising me and Ric is certainly at the top of his game when it comes to nutrition and strength training. He is an essential and invaluable member of my training team as these are areas that are hugely important and impact on my performance.
“Ric has really educated me on why I need to eat certain foods at certain times of day and because I understand the rationale and the science behind his advice, it makes sense to me and helps me to stay focused and disciplined.
“The fight on Saturday against Stephane Jamoye is one of my biggest tournaments yet but I know that with the work of Ric and my team I will be able to put in my best performance.”
Here, Ric from LSFPT shares some of his tips on how you can make some small changes to your diet to improve your own health and fitness:
• Shop locally and buy fresh foods – instead of doing all your shopping at the supermarket, visit the local butcher, green grocer and buy as much as you can from them or from Bury Market as they offer fresher, locally sourced meat, fish, fruit and vegetables
• Drink up – try to drink between two and three litres of water per day
• Get outdoors – exercise outside as much as possible as the fresh air and natural daylight will work wonders for your health and energy levels
• Sleep soundly – make sure you get a good eight hours’ sleep per night with an afternoon power nap if you can, even half an hour after work will help your body rest and recuperate
• Make informed choices on what you eat and make an effort to switch some foods for healthier options – such as having sweet potatoes instead of standard potatoes, eating more vegetables and fruit and cutting down on alcohol consumption
• Treat yourself – instead of having savoury snacks and sweet treats every day, cut back and just indulge in one treat per week
• It’s about balance – make sure your diet is balanced, varied and colourful.
