Manchester to host Polish Dance Spectacular by folklore groups from the UK

""

More than 350 performers from across the UK will gather in Manchester on Sunday 8th February to stage a concert displaying traditional Polish folk dances, songs and music.

From 4pm at the Lowry Theatre, twelve dance troupes, from London, Birmingham, Leicester, Southampton, Slough and Cambridge as well as local Polish dance group, Polonez Manchester, will perform regional dances from Poland in dazzling, authentically produced costumes.

The energetic and colourful dances will be accompanied by traditional singing as well as music played by a live folk orchestra.

The show is organised by the Federation of Polish Folklore Groups in Great Britain, a not-for-profit organisation that supports and promotes Polish cultural activities in the UK. Performed every three years, the event is held in different British cities and Manchester was chosen thanks to its staging and accommodation facilities and the strong Polish community in the region.

The majority of participants are UK-born Polish native descendants of the original community that settled in England after World War Two so many are second or third generation Poles. In addition, there are Polish nationals who have moved to live in the UK in the last few years, keen to keep their heritage alive. Dancers are aged from 13 through to their early sixties with many husbands, wives, partners, children and grandchildren maintaining the traditions.

Joseph Jenvey, regional festival manager and dancer for Polonez Manchester, says: "We’re delighted the event is to be held in Manchester and it has the full support of Polonez and the Polish community in the region. The event will truly be a spectacular and exciting performance, showcasing authentic Polish dances from the many regions of Poland – some are elegant and romantic, while others are more lively and acrobatic.

“Traditional Polish folk dance is alive and thriving here in the UK. This is the ninth festival of its kind and we are proud to host the event in Manchester, which has had a vibrant Polish community since the mid 1940s.

“Many of the groups will be performing new dances that have been choreographed especially for the event in costumes that have been produced by specialists in Poland following traditional patterns and designs. We’d encourage those interested in Polish culture, traditional dance and music to come along to what is certain to be a very impressive and memorable show.”

Tickets are prices at £17 (including booking fee) and are available via The Lowry Theatre website on www.thelowry.com/event/polish-dance-spectacular
