Commuters welcomed to 'WoManchester' Oxford Road

"We want to show how far weve come from 16th century life and show that theres still plenty of room to move forward"
Rachael Garwood

Manchester has been renamed ‘WoManchester’ by a group of cheeky actors as a tribute to the city’s amazing women.

The take-over comes on International Women’s Day (March 8) and saw the characters from The Blackpool Tower Dungeon popping up at various locations across the city.

The smugglers and jester were initially seen outside Manchester Oxford Road Station during the early morning rush hour, causing “havoc” by covering half of the city’s welcome sign to create the word ‘WoManchester’.

They were also spotted on Regent Road in rush hour traffic, speaking to members of the public and posing for selfies.

The Blackpool Tower Dungeon is based on real history from the 16th century with live action performances showcasing the challenges women faced in the past. It is hoped that this activity in Manchester will highlight how far women’s rights have progressed.

International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on March 8th. The day marks the achievements of women worldwide and puts the spotlight on inspirational females through time.

Rachael Garwood, performance manager at The Blackpool Tower Dungeon, said: “The female characters depicted in our attraction were often vilified for being women with some even hanged or treated like vermin by men. We want to show how far we’ve come from 16th century life and show that there’s still plenty of room to move forward.”

A uniquely thrilling attraction for the whole family to enjoy, where you’ll live and breathe Lancashire’s ‘orrible past, visitors to The Blackpool Tower Dungeon learn about points of British history including the black plague, torture techniques and witchcraft.

The Blackpool Tower Dungeon is open daily from 10:30am until 5pm. For more information including how to buy tickets, please visit www.thedungeons.com/blackpool.
