The animal welfare showcase saw students from Pershore College’s supported learning course invite children from nearby Cropthorne-With-Charlton CE First School to attend the colourful occasion.
The primary school children were taught all about the small mammals and reptiles on show, and those brave enough were encouraged to touch or hold them.
Bryony Baulch, technician instructor for supported learning, Pershore College, part of the WCG group, said: “The students have been planning this event for several weeks and they have all done brilliantly.
“The main objective of the day was for them to enjoy themselves. Because of the needs that our students have, just organising the event was a massive achievement.
“To have over 25 small children gathered together could potentially be overwhelming for many students but to see them not only coping with the situation but thriving with it was great.
“I hope today’s event has given them more confidence and shown them what they’re capable of achieving. I am so proud of each and every one of them!”
Louise Badham, Head of Department for Supported Learning, Re-engagement and Schools at Pershore College, said: “We offer supported learning foundation courses to students from the age of 14 years.
“Some of our students may not have had a great time at school. They may suffer with anxiety or there might also have been other circumstances which stopped them from reaching their full potential.
“For some of our students, meeting and talking with people can be a challenge, so events like the animal welfare showcase are great for developing these skills and building their confidence. They have all done brilliantly!”
Tom Champken, a 17-year-old supported learning student at Pershore College, said: “I think it has gone really well. It was great to meet the little kids and show them the animals – I’ve really enjoyed it!”
Miss Katy Hughes, Cats Class Teacher (Year R/1): “We’ve had the best day ever! Who knew there were so many different animals homed at Pershore College?
“The children really enjoyed all the well thought out and diverse activities, as well as being able to see and touch so many different animals.
“The leaders were really friendly and helpful - they did a fantastic job of showing the children around as well as giving them many fun facts!”
