Coventry cricket prodigy completes injury rehab in time for Barbados tour

A Coventry cricket prodigy has completed his comeback from a damaging knee injury and is now set to head out on tour in Barbados.

James Lee, from Finham, suffered a freak dislocated patella seven months ago but has worked tirelessly to recover by accessing support from the University of Warwick.

His injury came just a week before he was set to train with his cricket idol Stuart Broad.

James has been working with the physiotherapy and strength and conditioning team at the University of Warwick’s Sports and Wellness Hub to come back stronger from injury.

The university has been able to provide an end-to-end rehabilitation service, starting with the elite physiotherapy team and moving on to the strength and conditioning coaches to return to full fitness.

The 15-year-old plays cricket for Berkswell Cricket Club in the Warwickshire Premier League and for his school Princethorpe College.

He said: “I was batting in the nets in training, rotated and just felt my knee pop. Once we took the pads off, we saw just how bad it was, it was my first ever big injury.

“I feel stronger than I did before the injury. Working with the team at the Sports and Wellness Hub has helped me to understand my body and how to work effectively in the gym.

“The recovery has been great. I’ve come back much quicker than we thought I could and now I’m really looking forward to getting out to Barbados.

“It’s exciting, the conditions will be tough but it’s a good opportunity for me to test myself against local teams there and prove myself amongst some of Warwickshire’s best young players.”

The physiotherapy clinic at the Sports and Wellness Hub provides elite level care for everyone, from professional sportspeople to individuals struggling with pain in their day-to-day lives.

It is also based on the same floor as the state-of-the-art gym at the hub, which also features a dedicated and spacious strength training zone with cardio, resistance, free weight and functional training, sled track, training rigs and 13 Olympic lifting platforms.

The clinic is run by lead physiotherapist Natasha Bedford, who has experience of working with athletes at the top of their game, from British Diving and Great Britain Badminton, to professional rugby.

Lisa Dodd-Mayne, Director of Sports and Active Communities at the University of Warwick, said: “We have elite physiotherapy facilities at the Sports and Wellness Hub and it is great to see a young athlete from the local community accessing them.

“Natasha worked closely with James to improve his range of movement and using the equipment we have here to help him come back stronger than before his injury.

“He was then able to access the next stage in his recovery with our strength and conditioning coaches, who are able to provide personalised training for athletes of all levels.

“Our state-of-the-art spacious gym is ideal for athletes, utilising the equipment we have on the road to recovery.

“James is now stronger, fitter and injury free thanks to our team. He is ready to have a great cricket season.”
