Ware care home residents take birdwatch weekend to the nest level

"Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities here at Snowdrop House, and we had a lot of fun celebrating this years Birdwatch event."
Michelle McClelland, deputy home manager

This year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch saw residents at Care UK’s Snowdrop House, on Baldock Street, celebrate the best of British birds with some exciting avian-themed activities.

As part of the celebrations, the home welcomed Coda Falconry to give residents the opportunity to get close to some of Britain’s most magnificent creatures, including the barn and sunda scops owl. Everyone enjoyed the special ‘show and tell’ session and learned more about our feathered friends.

Team members and residents also recorded the number of birds and other wildlife species that visited the care home’s garden – data which will be used by the RSPB to monitor trends and understand how different species are doing.

Michelle McClelland, deputy home manager at Snowdrop House, said: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities here at Snowdrop House, and we had a lot of fun celebrating this year’s Birdwatch event.

“Animal therapy can be extremely beneficial for older people – especially for those living with dementia. Being close to animals can help lift a person’s mood, stimulate social interaction and ease agitation. Connecting with nature can also help to conjure happy memories and the associated emotions.

“I’d like to say thank you to Coda Falconry for joining us and making the day so special. Residents thoroughly enjoyed being able to get up close to some of Britain’s most beautiful birds and learn more about the local wildlife in Ware.”
