"Richard and Rob are exceptionally talented professionals who have demonstrated the value they can bring to the firm and our clients."
Leading UK and European patent attorneys Appleyard Lees announces the appointment of Richard Bray and Robert Cumming as partners from 1 April 2016 as part of the firm’s continued expansion.
Richard Bray is a patent attorney who specialises in physics, consumer electronics and engineering, working with a wide range of clients from high-growth start-ups to some of the world’s largest global corporations and several leading UK universities, and is a familiar face on UK science parks. Richard covers all aspects of patent work including due diligence, freedom-to-operate, infringement, UK and European Patent Office hearings and litigation.
Robert Cumming is a dual qualified lawyer and trade mark attorney who helps clients identify and protect the value of their brands in the UK and internationally. He works with businesses in virtually every market sector from transport to food, software to education, and retail to financial services to advise them strategically from both a commercial and legal perspective, and in registering, protecting and defending trade marks which are crucial to their business’s success.
Announcing the new partners today, Managing Director Joanne King comments: “Richard and Rob are exceptionally talented professionals who have demonstrated the value they can bring to the firm and our clients. Each joined us as qualified attorneys over the last few years from highly respected professional firms and have played key roles in working with clients, winning new business and managing high performing teams.”
The appointment of Richard and Rob brings the firm’s number of partners to 14 and further recent recruitment to a total headcount of just over 100. The firm was recently short-listed in the ‘Managing IP Awards’ and the ‘North West Chemicals Awards’ and is ranked in both Chambers and Legal 500 directories as a leading firm known for its “great breadth of knowledge and sector specialisms”, being “pragmatic and broad-based in its advice”, “highly responsive” and having a “down to earth approach.”
Joanne King comments “We welcome people to our firm at any stage of their career from graduates in almost any discipline to highly experienced qualified attorneys who have built up practices and reputations. Over a third of our attorneys have worked ‘in house’ within businesses or academic institutions in either attorney or research roles. Both Richard and Rob are exceptional team players and managers as well as outstanding attorneys, and have proven their ability to win and retain client relationships.”
“One aspect of Appleyard Lees of which I am particularly proud is our work-life balance and creating opportunities beyond just the professional roles our people have. It’s more than just ensuring the balance of family and work interests; it’s also about really enjoying the working environment. Richard is one of our key trainers and lecturers and very active in many of our professional memberships and marketing the firm. He has lectured on the BPP Graduate in Law course and CIPA Patent Administrators Course; Rob is a world championship qualifier for Great Britain at duathlon which the firm sponsors, as well as being very involved in professional bodies and their global conferences, such as INTA. Rob also lectures at Sheffield University.”
Appleyard Lees converted to LLP (Limited Liability Partnership) status in March 2016 and is run by a management committee headed by Joanne King (formerly of Deloitte).
