"Its not something we have done before, and we thought it would be a fantastic activity, giving the many benefits dancing provides."
Julie Wood, registered manager, Kirkgate House
Residents at Kirkgate House enjoyed a taste of Strictly Come Dancing recently, when dancers Tom and Fiona Pike visited to give an interactive afternoon of Latin and Ballroom dancing including the Foxtrot, Waltz, Cha Cha and Jive.
Kirkgate House, owned and managed by the Hica Group, provides care and support for people with learning disabilities. Its activity programme is a key part of the care provided at the home, which is carefully planned and developed according to each resident’s care plan.
Julie Wood, Registered Manager at Kirkgate House, said: “Dance couple Fiona and Tom Pike got in touch to discuss the possibility of providing a Latin and Ballroom dance activity to some of our residents.
“It’s not something we have done before, and we thought it would be a fantastic activity, giving the many benefits dancing provides.
“It was a fabulous afternoon and the dancing provided gentle exercise, encouraged conversation between everyone, was something fun and exciting to do, and developed a new skill.”
The residents enjoyed watching Fiona and Tom and then attempted to recreate some of the classic dance steps and moves associated with each famous dance. It was a stimulating and interactive session, which residents greatly benefited from.
Fiona Pike added: “We found it a wonderfully rewarding day and really enjoyed our time there - the response that we received was great. It was lovely to see everyone interacting, smiling and keen to join in with the dancing.”
