Maggie's and HMT Sancta Maria Hospital Team Up For Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Maggie's and HMT Sancta Maria Hospital Team Up For Breast Cancer Awareness Month

" We were very pleased to welcome Maggies to HMT Sancta Maria to give us all a valuable reminder of the breadth of services available here in Swansea to those living with cancer, and their families."
HMT Sancta Maria Hospital Director, Stuart Hammond

Staff, visitors and patients at Swansea’s HMT Sancta Maria Hospital showed their support for cancer charity, Maggie’s, when the two healthcare and wellbeing specialists got together to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

A representative of Maggie’s visited Swansea’s private hospital, HMT Sancta Maria, at the beginning of October to collect a donation of £540, which was raised via the sale of some equipment. While at the site, in Swansea’s Uplands, Maggie’s talked to patients, their families and the HMT Sancta Maria workforce about the range of support services available to the people of Swansea at Maggie’s.

HMT Sancta Maria’s Hospital Director, Stuart Hammond, said: “We were very pleased to welcome Maggie’s to HMT Sancta Maria, both to receive our donation and to give us all a valuable reminder of the breadth of services available here in Swansea to those living with cancer, and their families. Swansea is so lucky to have an innovative and welcoming centre like Maggie’s in the City and it makes sense for us to work alongside them during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, since we are all part of the same caring community.

“So many of us have been affected by cancer. Even if we aren’t dealing with the diagnosis ourselves, most of us have loved ones who are, or who have done, and it is important that people know they can reach out for help available to them on their doorstep. I hope we can continue to work with Maggie’s in the future. It is an established part of HMT Sancta Maria Hospital’s operations that any profits we make are ploughed back into the hospital, for the benefit of our patients, or are given to appropriate local charities. This year we are pleased to have supported Maggie’s, as well as Hope House, Zak’s Place, Swansea Dementia Friendly and many others, with bake sales, raffles, sponsored events and other fundraising activities, to the tune of £12290.

Sarah Hughes, Maggie’s Centre Head, South Wales, said: “Many thanks to HMT Sancta Maria Hospital for opening their doors to us, and for their fundraising efforts for Maggie’s. Maggie’s helps thousands of people every year cope with the many physical, emotional and practical difficulties that cancer can bring and it is important that we do all we can to reach the people who need us. This is why awareness-raising events like this are crucial.  The Maggie’s centre in Swansea is a supportive, calming space for those who are dealing with the unique difficulties that cancer can bring and we hope, with continued support from the public, from fundraisers, business and from groups like HMT Sancta Maria Hospital, that we can offer even more support in the future.”
