Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust (PHNT) in collaboration with Luminati Waycon Ltd, have designed and developed a Patient Pump Bridge engineered to improve the comfort and safety of patient transportation. This new innovation is designed to hold infusion pumps (and other medical devices) away from the patient to ensure their comfort and safety while being transferred within a clinical setting.
Here we discuss the growth and development of the Patient Pump Bridge, how its design has revolutionised the comfort and safety of patient transportation, and how your clinical department can benefit from this new innovation.
Bridging the gap from idea to production
The idea of the Patient Pump Bridge was initially the brainchild of specialist engineers at PHNT. Andrea Carpenter, team lead at the PHNT specialist mechanical workshop, highlighted a gap in the market to revolutionise and address the comfort and safety of patient transportation within the Trust.
Patients undergoing treatment with infusion pumps and other monitoring equipment often need to be moved about within a Trust. While in transit, this can result in medical equipment placed on or around them causing discomfort and also serious risk of damage to the equipment. This led to the production of the original prototype, which was designed by Andrea Carpenter and Colin Putt, to provide a raised platform to hold vital equipment safely and out of the way of the patient.
Revolutionising patient transportation
The development of the Patient Pump Bridge has provided numerous benefits including the enhancement of patient comfort and safety during treatment. It has also been shown to substantially improve patient transfer times when transporting patients from trolleys to beds, or beds to scanning equipment, because the patient and a fully loaded Patient Pump Bridge can safely be moved simultaneously between beds and trolleys. When seconds count, this can make all the difference.
With the support of the Trust Innovation Pathway, Andrea and Colin then collaborated with a commercial partner, Luminati Waycon Ltd, to use their expertise in working with display plastics to finalise the design and manufacture four models of the bridge to meet the different clinical needs across various departments. These include the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Emergency Department (ED)/Theatres and Imaging with each design optimised to suit the patient and the user within each clinical setting.
All bridges are made using a robust PETG material and can easily be stored on an integrated storage rail.
So what is the Patient Pump Bridge range?
The ICU Bridge is designed and engineered for clinical use within the Intensive Care Unit, where patients often require large numbers of syringe drivers and monitoring equipment in transit. It features adjustable legs to allow the width to be altered to accommodate the patient and the equipment used. In the closed position it is also designed to fit onto a CT couch by direct patient transfer.
ED & Theatre Bridge
Designed for the Emergency Department and theatre, this bridge features adjustable legs and is designed to fit directly onto the CT couch. It also features cut outs in the sides to accommodate equipment hoses. Alternatively, the ED version of this bridge features strapping to integrate with the Wolverson X-Ray Trauma Board.
The Imaging Bridge is designed with a fixed, narrower width that can pass through standard and wide-bore scanner apertures and rest on CT scanner couches. Although the Imaging Bridge and the pumps resting on it cannot be scanned, keeping the pumps with the patient makes the process of aligning the scan with the correct part of the body quicker and safer.
The Patient Pump Bridge range has been successfully implemented across PHNT as well as other Trusts across the South West Peninsula. It has since received positive feedback for its innovation and design to revolutionise the comfort, safety and ease of patient transportation.
