"The events have been fantastic so far. They have made everyone want to get up and dance even me, and Im partially sighted!"
Joan Wyatt, resident at Cavell House
As part of a “reminiscence initiative”, the home, based on Middle Road, is encouraging residents to look back to their youth and celebrate the past with a series of activities, along with redecoration of the home based on the themed events.
As reminiscence is sharing life stories from the past, those living with dementia are able to recall these memories much easier than short-term interactions and conversations. This allows the residents to feel much more independent and more in control of the conversation.
Residents were treated to a sixties themed afternoon tea with gala pie and some wonderful entertainment from “The King”.

Nikki Stevenson, home manager at Cavell House, said: “It was another successful themed day, and my staff and I can’t wait for the next one which is going to be a hippy event!
“It’s wonderful to see the enjoyment on the residents’ faces and reminiscence can give them a sense of competence and allows them to feel more confident in their interactions with our staff.”
