A Blairgowrie care home has collected just shy of £3,000 towards a new sensory garden for their residents.

To raise funds for the new sensory garden, the team at Muirton house, created a pop-up shop in Blairgowrie at the end of June 2019.

Muirton House is situated on Essendy Road, Blairgowrie, on the banks of the river Ericht. The home is nestled in large, peaceful grounds, set in a country location with abundant wild life and views over fields and woodland.

This idyllic setting is perfectly suited for a sensory garden, to include features, surfaces, objects and plants that stimulate the senses through touch, sight, scent, taste and hearing.

Gillian Rennie, administrator,  said: “With the help of staff, family and residents we filled the pop-up, charity shop with clothes, toys, shoes, kitchen goods ,books, candles, bags, pictures, sofas, a kitchen table and we even had a drum kit donated!

“The drum kit hasn’t been sold yet, so, if any budding drummers out there want to buy it, that may take us over the £3,000 mark.”

Catherine Russell, Home Manager, said: “Thank you so much to staff, family and friends who have volunteered in the charity shop.

“I’d also like to say a huge thanks to everyone who visited the shop, donating many excellent quality goods and spending your money.

“The money is going towards a therapeutic space for people to recuperate and an accessible garden for people with sight loss or wheelchairs to be fully independent.

“It will help to enrich their lives in so many ways, it is very important for residents’ surroundings to be safe, stimulating but comfortable.”

Muirton House forms part of Larchwood Care and is managed by Healthcare Management Solutions. 79% of Larchwood Care Homes are rated as ‘Good’ or above by the CQC, above the industry average.
