"I just feel that Uncle Joes Mint Balls help my voice when Im performing on stage, so it seemed the obvious thing to do to take some to the theatre with me."
Will Edgerton

A humble mint from Wigan is helping the cast at a top London stage production perform to their best – after actor Will Edgerton introduced them to his home-town favourites.

Will, who is playing Tybalt in the production of Romeo & Juliet at Shakespeare’s Globe theatre until October 17, took a jar of Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls sweets to rehearsals as he knew they helped his throat cope with the demands of regular performances.

Now the mints, which are made with the finest oil of peppermint, have become a firm favourite with other cast members and are in the green room before every performance.

Regular supplies of Uncle Joe’s are being sent down by the company whenever Will’s family, who still live in the Lancashire town, visit him in London.

Will, who made his name in the films Cherry (2021), Man Down (2019) and Mother Earth (2019) and who made his professional stage debut at the Globe, said: “I just feel that Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls help my voice when I’m performing on stage, so it seemed the obvious thing to do to take some to the theatre with me.

“I’ve eaten them for most of my life and now the rest of the cast like them as well.”

Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls contain only three natural ingredients: pure cane sugar (with raw cane molasses), cream of tartar and the finest oil of peppermint.  They are hand cooked on open fires to caramelise and offer a truly unique mint taste.

Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls Joint Managing Directors John and Antony Winnard said: “Over the years we have had lots of people telling us why they like Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls but to hear that they are helping the actors at one of the most famous theatres in the world is fantastic.”

Romeo & Juliet has been running at Shakespeare’s Globe theatre all summer and the cast also includes Alfred Enoch (Harry Potter, How To Get Away With Murder), who plays Romeo, and Beth Cordingly (The Bill, EastEnders, Casualty) who plays Lady Capulet.

Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls are made by Wigan-based William Santus and Co Ltd, a privately-owned traditional sweet company that was established in 1898.

The ownership has been passed down through the family generations and joint Managing Directors John and Antony Winnard are the great, great nephews of the company’s founder.

The Mint Balls are still manufactured using the same traditional methods as when Mrs Santus originally made the sweets in her kitchen in 1898.
