"We are delighted and proud that Roberts bakery has won this award for our Ultimate Hot Cross Buns. It represents an ongoing commitment to using sustainable packaging solutions across the business. "
Will Harrop, Packaging Manager
The bakery’s Ultimate Hot Cross Buns packaging clenched the top spot in recognition of Roberts being the only UK bakery brand to flow wrap fresh morning goods in easily recyclable paper at home, which was a real challenge to accomplish.
Winners of all 25 categories were revealed online, in a marked change to the usual glittering event due to ongoing restrictions.
Flying the flag for homegrown innovation, design, development and manufacture of the product and print all took place in the UK. The packaging development also saw Roberts trial and invest in new equipment to heat seal and run on a flow wrapper that would keep the buns fresh for the required shelf life of six days.
Will Harrop, Packaging Manager at Roberts bakery, said: “It goes without saying that we’re both delighted and proud that Roberts bakery has won the Best Packaging of a New Product Award for our Ultimate Hot Cross Buns.
“When we rebranded in 2017, our journey began to become the nation’s most innovative, next generation bakery brand. Sustainable packaging innovation is at the heart of this, and we’re working really hard to reduce some of the 11,000 or so tonnes of hard-to-recycle plastic packaging produced by bakeries like us, across the UK, every year.
“The launch of our Ultimate Hot Cross Buns also saw us take yet another category first as the only UK bakery brand to flow wrap fresh morning goods in easily recyclable at home paper. Even better, our now award-winning packaging also helped us secure a national listing with Tesco. Sustainable packaging innovation is at the heart of this."
