A civil engineering firms landfill and waste management expertise was put to the test at a challenging site in Cornwall.

Jones Bros completes challenging landfill project in Cornwall

"We had 15 people on site, including plant operatives and ground workers, and the entire team played a crucial role in ensuring the work was carried out on schedule and to budget."

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK upgraded old public right-of-way paths, which had not been used for 50 years, as part of a restoration plan by Cornwall Council.

They also installed a surface water management system at the environmentally sensitive site.

Suez Recycling and Recovery UK operates the landfill on behalf of Cornwall Council and appointed Jones Bros.

The landfill site, in Redruth, Cornwall, presented challenges for the Jones Bros team, with the area situated above mine shafts.

Gareth Jones, site agent, said: “It always creates extra difficulties when you are working above possible cavities such as mine shafts because it makes the structure less stable.

“Ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were carried out to detect any changes in density beneath the soil and our plant operatives excavated down to investigate further.

“There were three different routes of access on the old public paths, totalling 1,500m in length. We re-profiled the ground using type one stone, which is ideal for high quality paths. We also installed fencing throughout the bridleways.

“Another challenging aspect was that some of the works were carried out directly beneath overhead telecommunication and 33Kv electric services.

“We also installed a surface water management system, with our engineers excavating a ditch, lining it with hessian rolls, and placing culverts in to carry water away.”

Gareth added: “We had 15 people on site, including plant operatives and ground workers, and the entire team played a crucial role in ensuring the work was carried out on schedule and to budget.”

Jones Bros provides a wide range of remediation services for contaminated land and brownfield sites, and is widely acclaimed as one of the leading qualified contractors in the sector.

The company’s expertise in waste remediation has led to further success in the recycling and waste management facility sector, including designing and building a range of recycling and waste management centres.

Founded in the 1950s and employing almost 350 people, Jones Bros has grown significantly over the past decade. As well as waste management, the company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, and renewable energy projects around the UK.
