McAuliffe Group, a subcontractor of Miller Homes in the North West, has won the Best Application of Remediation Technologies award at the Brownfield Awards 2020. The specialist environmental contractor was also highly commended for the Project of the Year category for Novus in Stretford, a regenerated housing development by Miller Homes, based on the former Itron Gas Meter Factory near Old Trafford.

The Brownfield Awards celebrated its 16th year this month and is dedicated to recognising talent in the brownfield, regeneration and contaminated land industry. For the first time in its history, the awards took place virtually this year.

McAuliffe Group was awarded the Best Application of Remediation Technologies thanks to its innovative dual-action approach to treating TCE contamination. This saved 10,000 tonnes of waste material from going to landfill, and 20 weeks’ worth of time from the original works programme.

For the work on Miller Homes’ Novus site, the McAuliffe Group was also highly commended for Project of the Year thanks to it securing discharge of planning condition, enabling the gateway project to move forward. This also helped to save time off the original programme and saw 99.7% of onsite material being reused.

Novus is the much-welcomed regeneration project coming to Stretford thanks to housebuilder Miller Homes. The former Itron gas meter factory will soon be home to 191 apartments and 91 houses. The apartments will be one and two bedroomed homes, where the houses will be 2-4 bedroomed.

John McAuliffe, group managing director at McAuliffe Group, said: “It’s been a real privilege to work with Miller Homes to unlock this gateway site, which had sat derelict since the Itron factory closed in 2016.

“The Brownfield Award is testament to the hard work of our team, who combined their technical expertise with proven technologies to design and deliver the most efficient and sustainable remediation strategy for this site.”

Leanne Feeley, Sales Manager for Miller Homes North West added: “Being both highly commended and winning an award is testament to the fantastic work completed by McAuliffe Group. This level of attention to detail has been seen across the board at Novus. We’re committed to high quality and sustainable work for this development, and for all of our developments across the country."
