Karen Minteh, who took over the reins at Disability Action Yorkshire’s Claro Road care home in 2016, finished as runner-up in The Carer UK’s Home Manager Unsung Hero Award.
Karen was nominated for the award by Disability Action Yorkshire Chief Executive, Jackie Snape, who said in her submission: “Registered managers are very often overlooked for these kind of awards, yet they often (and definitely in Karen’s case) work long hours to ensure that the people in their care have the best possible outcomes in life.
“Since she became registered manager in 2016 she has worked tirelessly to improve standards, increase staff morale and capabilities and most importantly to improve the quality of life for our customers.
“Staff speak very highly of Karen and her supportive management style, they say that they enjoy working at 34 Claro Road, they feel a strong part of the team and they feel listened to.
“Karen has recently introduced a ‘what is important to you’ element to staff meetings which is very much valued, staff feel they get the opportunity to talk about issues they might have not discussed in a safe and supportive environment – with the whole team helping to find solutions.
“Customers think very highly of Karen. They report that since she became manager there have been many improvements, they love her ‘open door’ style and say that they can talk to her at any time.
“34 Claro Road is a happy, dynamic, environment – and this is thanks to Karen.”
Jackie Snape said: “I’m delighted that Karen has been recognised for her work in The Carer Awards, and this sentiment is echoed by staff and customer alike.”
Karen, who received a £50 M&S Voucher as a runner-up prize, said: “This has come as a total surprise to me, and the first I knew anything about the award was when I arrived for work after the New Year.
“I’m incredibly humbled that I was nominated and it’s a fantastic way to begin 2020.”
