The Heatons Funeralcare introduces Memory Boxes for those with dementia

"Were currently appealing for local nursing homes to get in touch so we can help to stimulate long term memories and encourage people to talk about their past."
Peter Eastwood, Funeral Director at The Heatons

Co-op Funeralcare in Heaton Chapel has introduced a ‘Memory Box’ to the local community. Memory Boxes are a new initiative aimed to trigger long-term memory recognition for those living with dementia.

The Memory Box, which will be taken to care homes and day centres in Stockport by Co-op colleagues, is filled with memorabilia. Items include newspaper articles from 1940, a Military Medal, a vinyl player, a vintage camera, comic books and more.

The boxes are used to encourage people with dementia to engage with the memorabilia, prompting conversations about their lives and to reminisce about the past.

The concept was initially thought of by one of Co-op’s Funeral Directors in Scotland when he became mindful that many people within his local community were being affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s, which was leading to feelings of loneliness.
