"DMSF is designed to help young people from the most marginalised groups within society to climb up the ladder of life"
Founder and CEO of DMSF, Diane Modahl MBE
Olympian and Commonwealth athlete, Diane Modahl has been listed in The Queen’s Birthday 2018 Honours List to be appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), as Founder of the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation for services to Sport and Young People in North West England.
Diane Modahl is one of accomplished middle distance runners. She won a Gold Medal in the 1990 Commonwealth Games, followed by a further Silver and Bronze Medal. Diane represented Britain in an impressive four Olympic Games, from 1988 to 2000 and was unbeaten for six consecutive seasons by any other British athlete over her specialist distance of 800m. She also held the English, British and Commonwealth records for both 800m and 600m.
‘ I have to say I am rather overwhelmed by the Honours recognition, for which I am truly grateful.
‘As a kid there were two things that were fact in our house: 1) Church on Sunday 2) Sport on Saturday. Ironically this tradition somehow led to gold, silver and bronze medals throughout my athletics career and also gave way for opportunities to support and advocate Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games bids, two of which were successful.’
After retiring from athletics, Diane and her husband Olympic coach Vicente Modahl, established the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation, a registered charity. Her early experiences as a young person from a deprived community inspired her to establish a youth foundation to help those most in need.
The Diane Modahl Sports Foundation champions young people from disadvantaged areas across the North West, enabling them to make the most of themselves in sport, education and employability.
‘I suppose, in many ways, DMSF is an unintentional extension of my athletics career.
‘DMSF is designed to help young people from the most marginalised groups within society to climb up the ladder of life.
‘I am chuffed that this recognition enables our team to go forward in the knowledge that our work is actually giving a voice and providing opportunities - where they are limited, for ambition to thrive. Taking the chance out of success and making it a choice.’
