Disabled athletes meet for annual games at Field of Dreams

""

More than 250 disabled athletes from across the North West and North Wales gathered in Chester recently to take part in an annual sports and athletics tournament.

The 14th annual Rotary District 1180 Disabled Games took place at MBNA’s Field of Dreams facility where 300 volunteers and spectators watched participants compete in sixteen different sports, including archery, carpet bowls and cricket.

Pamela Drew, who helped organise the Games, said: “The Games were fantastic and everybody involved thoroughly enjoyed the day. The support from the volunteers and crowd was unbelievable and people came from all over the region, which shows the popularity of the event.

“I’d like to thank all the participants, the volunteers who came down to help and the amazing crowd for showing their support.”

Ian O’Doherty, Chief Executive at MBNA, added: “We’re very proud of our long-standing association with the Rotary District 1180 Disabled Games. It’s a privilege to host this tournament and each year it continues to attract individuals and organisations from across the regions.

“The enthusiasm shown by the athletes, volunteers and audience made the day a huge success and everybody should be very proud of their achievements.”

Each sporting event was coordinated by a professional in their respected sport and athletes were assisted throughout the day by volunteers from the Rotarian club.

The day concluded with a presentation ceremony where every athlete received a medal for their involvement from the Lord Mayor of Chester, Bob Rudd; Rotarian District Governor, Les Wilson; two-time gold medallist Paralympian John Stubbs and fellow Paralympian Leigh Walmsley.
